James Taylor Quartet

British jazz-funketeers, the James Taylor Quartet will headline in Lyme Regis for the very first time.

For over a quarter of a century, they have set the standard for the coolest funkiest acid jazz around. Also known for their prolific recording and live schedule, they’ve gained legendary status as one of the most important jazz crossover combos in the country.  With their trademark husky Hammond sound,  pulsating rhythms and energetic live shows, they show no signs of slowing down.

Widely admired by their musical peers but never bettered, James Taylor has featured on albums by Manic Street Preachers, The Pogues and U2.

Driven by Taylor’s distinctive sound, their relentlessly entertaining tunes take their inspiration from the straight ahead funk of the sixties and the rare-grooves of the seventies.

Although having dozens of successful albums to their credit, they’re still best appreciated live. So, no prisoners taken, no quarter given, just muscular music guaranteed to get the room shaking. If you’re looking for a jazz funk workout, then this is the evening for you.

Acid jazz, combines elements of jazzsoulfunk, and disco. It originated in the London club scene of the mid-1980s and spread to the US, Japan, Eastern Europe, and Brazil. Major acts included Brand New HeaviesIncognitoUs3, and Jamiroquai from the UK. Many acts that might have been defined as acid jazz are now seen as jazz-funkneo soul, or jazz rap.

James Taylor (Hammond organ), Andrew McKinney (bass), Pat Illingworth (drums), and Mark Cox (guitar).
